WELCOME

Hey Freshman!

Welcome to CCNY and Congratulations on your enrollment in FIQWS 10115: Bridges to Success! As you begin your academic journey at City College there are several aspects of the Colin Powell School, I will inform you about. I will give you insight on assignments, campus, resources, events and more.

Your course FIQWS 10115: Bridges to Success will teach your writing, critical thinking and research skills. Prepare for a variety of essays and presentations. You will need to do research for these written assignments, take advantage of the resources provided to students. Visiting the writing center will enable you to strengthen your writing skills and receive assistance where needed. My favorite FIQWS 10115 composition assignment was The News Feature. It was my first time completing an assignment of this nature but I found it pleasurable. My tip to you if you are given this assignment is to choose a topic you find joy speaking about and find it easy educating others about it. This will save you a lot of time that you will need to conduct research.

For the discussion portion of this course my favorite assignment was the Elevator Pitch. This assignment enabled me to understand how to present myself professionally, especially in the scenario where I may need to “sell” myself with the aim of a career opportunity. If you are given this assignment I really suggest after you’ve made your pitch script, read it and familiarize yourself so you present naturally for the final.

Our CCNY campus is beautiful and GREEN. We have the NAC (North Academic Center) building, Marshak Science building, Shepard Hall and the Colin Powell School. Be sure to visit campus beforehand so you can familiarize yourself. Learn where FIQWS 10115 will be held along with the rest of your classes. We don’t want you lost on your first day, but don’t ever hesitate to ask students or staff for help if needed.   Let me tell you about my favorite place on campus, the cafeteria! Located on the 2nd floor in NAC. There are a variety of meals and snacks offered but you maybe would rather explore your options off campus, and you can. Restaurants and cafes are available along Amsterdam Avenue and neighboring areas to our school. Explore and find what you love.

Throughout the year there I’ll be many events hosted here at CCNY. I urge you to always try to attend and engage in these events. Whether it be a guest lecture, workshop or cultural event you won’t regret going. You may even leave with inspiration that can help you with your courses, especially FIQWS 10115. Also attending any of these events will enable you to meet new people who can connect you with new opportunities.

CCNY is rich with resources to help students grow academically and personally. The Cohen Library is a great source to make use of. It’s many books and computer lab for you to access information for yourself or assignments. The academic advising office can help you with planning your academic journey at CCNY. If you need help with choosing courses and learning what is required for your desired major stop by. Most importantly, our counseling center is also available for any mental health services you need.

Yours truly,

Soleil W.
